During a routine trip from Sydney Australia, to Los Angeles Oceanic flight 815 is blown off course and crashes on a remote, deserted island. Convinced that rescue is coming soon, the surviving passengers set up camp on the beach and try to make the most of what they think will only be a short time on the island. The survivors attempt to find the transceiver so they can radio for help. But when a terrifying howl comes from the jungle, it becomes apparent that this is no ordinary island.

Jack, along with fellow passengers Charlie and Kate, returns to the beach camp with the transceiver they’ve found. Sayid, a former military communications officer, gets the transceiver working but tells the others he can get better reception if they head to higher ground. When they get there, they pick up a mysterious broadcast, prompting Charlie to ask the question everybody has been thinking - “Where are we?”

Jack discovers that the injured man he has been trying to save is a U.S. Marshal. “Don’t trust her, she’s dangerous,” the Marshal mutters repeatedly. When Jacks asks him who “she” is, the Marshal shows him a picture of Kate, the woman Jack’s been spending a lot of time with. On another part of the island, single father Michael questions his son about a conversation he had with another passenger - Locke.

A series of flashbacks reveals a secret that Locke has kept hidden form the other passengers. Meanwhile, the bodies inside the plane need to be disposed of, buy how? Jack decides the most effective way of doing so, but it’s grisly. When the castaways realize that the food supply is running out, Locke has a suggestion.  

While boarding on exhaustion, Jack repeatedly sees a mysterious man watching him from afar. He asks the other survivors if they’ve seen him too, but no one has. Haunted by the strange vision, Jack follows the man, only to recognize him as someone to whom he was very close. Meanwhile, the water supply runs dangerously low - a situation that erupts into violence when someone steals the last remaining bottles.

Jin, a Korean castaway who speaks no English, assaults Michael, seemingly without provocation. Sayid resolves the conflict by handcuffing him to the wreckage. Jack’s decision to move to the caves causes division among the castaways, and Jin’s wife must decide whether or not to free her husband… at the cost of revealing a long-hidden secret.

Charlie goes through a personal crisis, while Jack is trapped by a cave-in. The castaways struggle to free Jack, while Kate and Sayid attempt to triangulate the French broadcast - but their exploration is thwarted by a mysterious attack.

The onset of an asthma attack threatens Shannon’s life, and the only man who can help her is Sawyer, whom Boone believes stole her inhalers from the fuselage. When Sawyer refuses to help, Jack must decide whether to resort to violence to retrieve the medicine. Sayid is forced into a similar decision when Locke becomes the prime suspect in the attack that destroyed his radio equipment.

When a golf bag is found in the wreckage, Hurley constructs a primitive golf course to give the survivors a much-needed recreational outlet. In the jungle, Sayid’s attempt at exploration ends when he falls into a trap. He regains consciousness in the lair of a mysterious Frenchwoman named Danielle Rousseau. Sayid’s overtures of friendship are rebuffed as Rousseau resorts to torture, believing him to be part of the mysterious tribe already living on the island.

Claire is haunted by nightmarish visions that her baby is in danger. When the nightmares seem to come true and she appears to be attacked, no one believers her. Hurley suggests that they compile a list of the survivor’s names, and Boone suggests that it will same time to use the flight manifest as a reference. When Hurley compares the two, it leads to an unnerving conclusion about a passenger named Ethan Rom.

After the news about Hurley’s census is discovered, Jack and Locke try to find Claire, but discover that she and Charlie are missing. As Jack impulsively goes off to search for her, he finds himself on a collision course with the dangerous and mysterious Ethan Rom. After joining the search for Claire, Boone and Locke make a discovery that will change the lives of everyone on the island.

Enlisting Shannon to help translate the papers he stole from the Frenchwoman, Sayid makes a startling discovery. Meanwhile, Kate and Sawyer find a briefcase in wreckage submerged in a hidden lagoon and find themselves pitted against each other when it becomes clear that the contents of the case hold vital information about Kate’s past.

Boone’s growing jealousy over Sayid and Shannon’s friendship threatens to erupt in violence - until Locke steps in. Drugging Boone, Locke leaves him stranded in the jungle, where he must not only confront his feelings for his sister but also the menacing creature that stalks him from the shadows.

Michael becomes concerned when his son, Walt, begins to develop a special bond with Locke. Michael orders Locke to stay away from his son. Determined that the island is no place to raise a boy, Michael suggests to Jack and Sayid that they build a raft, but his suggestion is scoffed at.

After many days, Claire is finally found. While walking in the jungle, Jin and Charlie are confronted by Ethan Rom, who gives an ultimatum: bring Claire to him or one of the islanders will die each day. A trap is set up to catch Ethan using Claire as bait, but when Boone falls asleep on sentry duty, the results are tragic.

In the middle of the night, a wild boar steals the tarp that Sawyer has been using for his roof. Sawyer enlists Kate to help him track the boar down, but she takes advantage of his situation by asking for something in return. While Kate and Sawyer hunt down the animal, Charlie’s strange behavior causes Hurley to suspect he’s suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

A mysterious arsonist destroys Michael’s raft, and everyone’s suspicions turn to Jin, whose inability to defend himself prompts him to flee into the jungle. As the castaways hunt Jin down, Sun must decide the best way to protect her husband - even as she suspects that he may be guilty.

Michael begins building a new raft. He tells Jack that the chances of them being found while they’re on the raft will be increased if they can send out a distress signal. With the transceiver needing new batteries, Hurley remembers Sayid mentioning that the Frenchwoman had batteries. He suggests that they try and find her. While searching for Rousseau’s lair, Hurley discovers that the island may be linked to a secret from his own past.

Locke and Boone attempt to open up the hatch using their latest invention. Back at the camp, Sawyer is suffering from headaches and asks Jack for his medical opinion on what might be causing them. While in the jungle, Boone and Locke make a surprise discovery - which has tragic consequences for one of them.

Locke leaves the seriously injured Boone at the caves, forcing Jack to take heroic measures to save Boone’s life. Unaware that her brother’s life hangs by a thread, Shannon spends the night on a beach with Sayid. As their relationship evolves, Boone’s condition worsens. Jack’s abilities are further put to the test as Claire goes into an unexpected labor.

One island crime is solved - the identity of the arsonist who destroyed Michael’s raft. Shannon becomes convinced that Locke is responsible for Boone’s death and asks Sayid for “a favor”. Trekking into the jungle with Locke, Sayid becomes convinced that he is not responsible for the tragedy. But Shannon remains adamant and decides to take matters into her own hands.

With construction of the raft nearing completion, Kate has a special request for Michael - she wants to be on it when it sails. During a water break, Michael keels over in pain. Jack examines him and discovers that he has been poisoned. Jack and Locke’s investigation of the crime leads to a crashing revelation about Kate’s past.

Danielle Rousseau surprises the castaways by showing up at the camp with an ominous warning - the others are coming. The raft finally sets sail with Michael, Walt, Jin, and Sawyer on board. As they depart, black smoke mysteriously appears from the other side of the island - a harbinger of the imminent arrival of the others.

As the castaways brace themselves for an attack by the others, Claire’s baby is kidnapped, leading Charlie and Sayid on a dangerous chase into the jungle. While the threat of the others bears down on the castaways, the raft crew continues their flight from the island - but when the hope of rescue appears on the horizon, they will soon learn that appearances can be deceiving.

The second season starts where the survivors have left off with Jack, Locke and others going down the hatch and finding out what is under there. One of the castaways is chosen to descend into the mysterious hatch, and Shannon stumbles upon a shockingly familiar face in the jungle.

With the abduction of Walt fresh on their minds and their raft destroyed, Michael, Sawyer and Jin fight for their lives in the middle of nowhere in the ocean and discover a new predator in the roiling sea. Meanwhile on land, Locke must descend into the hatch when one castaway goes missing inside.

Jack, Locke and Kate learn more secrets about the hatch. Meanwhile, after being beaten and taken captive, Sawyer, Michael and Jin wonder if their captors are fellow survivors or the dreaded "Others." Flashbacks reveals more of Locke''s past in this episode as well as the introduction of Helen who shakes things up even more with her revealing personality and past.

Hurley struggles with an assigned task inside the hatch. Sawyer, Michael and Jin learn the identities of their captors and Claire uncovers a startling piece of information about the fate of the raft.

Michael heads into the jungle to look for Walt, but discovers that he is not alone. Meanwhile, Sawyer and Jin are ordered by their captors to take them to their camp. Back at the caves, Sun searches frantically for her missing wedding ring.

Sawyer’s wound becomes life-threatening as he, Michael and Jin make their way through the interior of the island with the tail section survivors. Meanwhile, Shannon is once again haunted by visions of Walt, and Charlie becomes jealous of Locke’s interest in Claire.

Tempers flare when Ana Lucia and her group stumble upon Sayid and the other castaways.

Kate''s original crime that started her life on the run is revealed. Meanwhile, the survivors lay one of their own to rest, Kate sleeplessly watches over a feverish Sawyer, and Mr. Eko has a surprise for Locke regarding the hatch.

Mr. Eko interrogates Charlie about the Virgin Mary statue, Claire begins to lose faith in Charlie when she discovers his secret, and Jack is an interested observer when Kate gives the recovering Sawyer a much-needed haircut.

Jack, Locke and Sawyer pursue a determined Michael after he heads into the jungle toward the dreaded "Others" in search of Walt. Meanwhile, Sun has a surprising reaction to Jin''s desire to join the search party, and Hurley and Charlie commiserate over the age-old conundrum of "what women want".

When Charlie''s vividly surreal dreams lead him to believe Claire''s baby, Aaron, is in danger, Locke suspects Charlie may be using again. Meanwhile, Sawyer encourages Hurley to act on his attraction to Libby.

Survivors fear that "The Others" may have returned when Sun is injured during a failed kidnapping attempt. Meanwhile, Sawyer is an amused but highly interested bystander when tension escalates between Jack, Locke, Kate and Ana Lucia.

When Rousseau leads Sayid to a mysterious captive in the jungle, he becomes determined to find out if he is one of the “Others.” Meanwhile, Sawyer discovers Hurley’s potentially devastating breech of the survivors’ trust and blackmails him into helping track an elusive island creature that won’t leave Sawyer alone.

A desperate Claire, along with Kate and Rousseau, attempts a return to the scene of her kidnapping where she believes she might find the cure for Baby Aaron''s mysterious illness. Meanwhile, Jack and Locke must keep their prisoner a secret from the rest of the survivors.

Sun wrestles with the thought of telling Jin a newfound secret that threatens to upset the entire balance of the survivors'' community. Meanwhile, Locke enlists Ana Lucia to interrogate the prisoner in order to extract more information than he, Jack or Sayid could.

When the hatch suddenly takes on a life of its own, Locke is forced to enlist the help of an unlikely ally. Meanwhile, Ana Lucia, Sayid and Charlie go off into the jungle to find out the truth about Henry.

Libby lends Hurley support when he begins to think the island is having a strange effect on him, and Locke''s sense of purpose is shaken when the prisoner provides new information about the hatch.

Rose is surprisingly and vehemently opposed to Bernard''s plan to create an S.O.S. signal; romantic sparks are rekindled between Jack and Kate when they trek into the jungle to propose a "trade" with "The Others"; and Locke begins to question his faith in the island.

Jack and Kate bring an exhausted Michael back to the camp, and with him, news about "The Others." Meanwhile, Ana-Lucia attempts to get the prisoner to confess, and Hurley plans a surprise date for Libby.

Mr. Eko enlists Locke to help find a secret location he believes houses answers to the island''s mysteries. Meanwhile, Jack and the other survivors struggle to cope with the horrific situation in the hatch.

A determined Michael convinces Jack and several castaways to help him rescue Walt from "The Others." Meanwhile, Charlie struggles with Eko''s decision to discontinue building the church.

After discovering something odd just offshore, Jack and Sayid come up with a plan to confront "The Others" and hopefully get Walt back. Meanwhile, Eko and Locke come to blows as Locke makes a potentially cataclysmic decision regarding the "button" and the hatch.

After learning that "The Others" pregnant women all died before giving birth on the island, Sun allows Juliet to examine her; Desmond allows an unlikely nemesis to help save the life of a new, mysterious island inhabitant.

Jack and the castaways begin their efforts to make contact with Naomi''s rescue ship.

The day before Jack's wedding, his father, Christian, apologizes to Jack that he was not as good a father as he could have been. Christian gives Jack a watch that had been passed down to him by his father. 

As Hurley gets wine for his picnic with Libby, he is confronted by Neil, a frozen yogurt salesman and crash survivor, about his relationship with Libby. 

Jack and Ben play chess during the time when Jack lived with the Others in the Barracks and they discuss Jack's upcoming planned departure from the island.

Juliet visits Michael during his captivity with the Others to discuss the necessity to free Walt from the island. 

Juliet wakes Jack to confess that she has been working with Ben the entire time.

Ben is startled to learn from Juliet about how dangerous Walt is becoming in captivity.  

Dr. Arzt tries to persuade many of the survivors from following Locke, Jack, and Kate by moving into the caves, that is until he hears the monster and decides to move there himself.

While burying her forged driver's license, Sun is discovered by Michael and feelings mount between them.

Arzt confesses to Michael that he lied about the monsoon season and why he went to Australia.

Ethan approaches Jack and gives him a suitcase of medical supplies, and the two discuss the possibility of Claire delivering her baby on the island.

While playing a game of golf with Michael and Hurley, Jin goes on a temper tantrum after missing a putt.

Juliet almost shows Amelia—a member of the Others' book club—Ben's x-rays.

Just after the crash, on day 1, what appears to be Christian tells Vincent the dog to go find Jack. The opening scene of the pilot episode is replayed, in which Jack wakes up and Vincent walkes by.

Jack is convinced that the freighter people are there to rescue them, while Locke is not. A division occurs among the survivors. The band of friends, family, enemies and strangers must continue to work together against the cruel weather and harsh terrain if they want to stay alive. But as they have discovered during their 90-plus days on the island, danger and mystery loom behind every corner, and those they thought could be trusted may turn against them. Even heroes have secrets.

The survivors begin to question the intentions of their supposed rescuers when four strangers arrive on the island.

Locke''s hostage may be the key to getting off the island, so Sayid and Kate go in search of their fellow castaway in an attempt to negotiate a peaceful deal.

Kate''s need to get information out of the hostage may jeopardize her standing with Locke as well as with Sawyer.

Sayid and Desmond hit a bit of turbulence on the way to the freighter, which causes Desmond to experience some unexpected side effects.
